Christofer Berglund
Senior Lecturer

Assistant Professor of Political Science

My research interests span the fields of comparative politics and international relations with a thematic focus on: ethnic conflicts and implicit attitudes; competitive authoritarianism and democratization; and state-building and strategic studies. I specialize in the geographic area of post-Soviet Eurasia, and utilize methods ranging from field experiments to elite interviews.

I received my PhD from Uppsala University in 2016; a postdoctoral grant from the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) in 2017; and joined Malmö University's Department of Global Political Studies in 2018.

In the doctoral dissertation, I examined the efforts of the Georgian government following the Rose Revolution to integrate two borderlands, one populated by Armenians (Javakheti) and the other by Azeris (Kvemo Kartli). Findings from this project received the Best Doctoral Student Paper Award (Category: Caucasus-Russia-Ukraine) at the 2014 ASN Conference. My articles have been published in Nations and Nationalism, Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Nationalities Papers, Caucasus Survey, and Demokratizatsiya. I have contributed chapters to several edited books, and written for Foreign Policy.

I have earlier worked with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES) in Uppsala, and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). I have also been a visiting scholar at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs (IERES), the Institute of International Relations (IIR) Prague, and at universities and think-tanks in the Caucasus. At present, I am a Non-Resident Research Fellow at the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS) in Tallinn, where I conduct research on the role of minorities in the defence forces. I am also a member of the editorial team at Nordisk Østforum (NØF).
